John Jay and Rufus King to Messrs. Printers, [12 August 1793]

John Jay and Rufus King to Messrs. Printers

FOR THE DIARY

[New-York, August 12.] [1793]

MESSRS. PRINTERS,

CERTAIN late publications render it proper for us to authorize to inform the Public, that a report having reached this City from Philadelphia, that Mr. Genet, the French Minister, had said he would Appeal to the People from certain decisions of the President; we were asked, on our return from that place, whether he had made such a declaration—we answered, THAT HE HAD, and we also mentioned it to others, authorising them to say that we had so informed them.1

NewYork, 20th. Nov. 1793

I am authorised by Mr. Genet to say that he did not declare that he would appeal to the People as in the above Publication is asserted—

About the 5th. of Novr. Mr Watson & Mr. Low informed me that Mr. William Denning a few days before, asserted at Paterson (where they were with other Gentlemen) that Genet had told him that he had never said that he would appeal from the President to the People— I requested Mr. Watson to deliver to Mr. Denning the [within?] certificate written on the other side and to ask him to sign it, intimating to him that his signature wd. probably produce the Proofs in support of the Charge. Mr. Watson delivered the paper to Denning about the 8th. Nov. and on the 16th. having urged him to sign or to refuse, Denning returned the enclosed note declining to sign the Certificate.
