TJ wrote “1726.”

The Appendix was the name for the second-floor bedroom over TJ’s cabinet (Cornelia J. Randolph plan of Monticello, ViU).

Benjamin and Meriwether Lewis Randolph.

John Vowles, a painter and glazier at the University, may have provided for TJ’s grandsons the small painted panels which identified the occupants of the University rooms (Bruce, University of Virginia, i, 258, ii, 206-7 description begins Philip A. Bruce, History of the University of Virginia, 1819-1919, New York, 1920-1922, 5 vols. description ends ).

Ebenezer Watts was a Charlottesville bookbinder (Rawlings, Early Charlottesville, pp. 6, 79 description begins Mary Rawlings, ed., Early Charlottesville: Recollections of James Alexander 1828-1874, Charlottesville, Va., 1942 description ends ; Watts to TJ, 22 Apr. 1826).

John Patten Emmet (1796-1842) was professor of natural history, and later of chemistry and materia medica, at the University of Virginia from 1825 until his death (Clemons, Notes on the Professors, pp. 30-4 description begins Harry Clemons, Notes on the Professors for Whom the University of Virginia Halls and Residence Houses Are Named, Charlottesville, Va., 1961 description ends ).

The second digit is not certainly decipherable. On 24 June TJ was stricken with his final illness and he died on 4 July. For his final days see Malone, Jefferson, vi, 496-9 description begins Dumas Malone, Jefferson and His Time, Boston, 1948-1981, 6 vols. description ends , and James A. Bear, Jr., “The Last Days in the Life of Thomas Jefferson,” MACH, xxxii (1974), 63-79.

Correct totals for each year are: for 1815, $1,443.85 and $6,610.53; for 1816, $1,955.50 and $6,036.79; for 1817, $1,729.47 and $5,168.65; and for 1818, $1,474.31 and $3,971.51. In ViU, at the end of 1815, is a similar chart which includes only the upper group of items for each year, that is, supplies purchased on credit from Charlottesville merchant James Leitch. In the ViU chart TJ provided totals for each of the four years, computed averages, and included a scheme for reducing his annual store account to $1,000.
