Thomas Jefferson to John B. Colvin, 4 April 1809

To John B. Colvin

Th: Jefferson presents his compliments to mr. Colvin and having recieved but two of his Monitors since left Washington on the 11th of Mar. he ascribes it to his having failed to give mr Colvin his address which is at Monticello near Milton. the post for Milton leaves Washington on1 Mondays in the afternoon.

John B. Colvin (ca. 1778–1826), newspaper editor and Republican supporter, edited the Baltimore Daily Advertiser (1800–01) before establishing the Republican Advocate in Frederick, Maryland (1802–06). In Washington he published Colvin’s Weekly Register (1808), succeeded by the Monitor, which folded in August 1809 due to lack of subscriptions. Thereafter Colvin worked as a clerk at the State Department (Brigham, American Newspapers description begins Clarence S. Brigham, History and Bibliography of American Newspapers, 1690–1820, 1947, 2 vols. description ends , 1:103, 265; Washington National Intelligencer, 4 Aug. 1809, 6 Apr. 1826).
