Promissory Note from Joel Yancey to Charles Clay on Behalf of Thomas Jefferson
for value received I promise to pay or cause to be paid unto Charles Clay his executors, administrators or assigns, on or before the first day of Dec. 1815 the just and full sum of Ninety Seven Doll. Seventy five Cents current money of U. States1 for which payment well and truly to be made I bind myself2 My3 heirs Executors and administrators firmly by these presents in the penal sum of one hundred & ninty dollars & fifty cents like money, given under my hand and seal this 3rd day of October 1815 attested by for Thomas Jefferson

Jeferson $97.75”; with Clay’s notation at head of text that the correct figures were $97.75 and $195.50; notation by TJ on verso: “Clay Charles. pd Apr. 29. 16. by ord. on Archib. Robertson 100.20. for corn”; additional notation by TJ in pencil on verso: “John Depriest 70.D. June 1,” with this notation relating to the purchase of a horse for which TJ contracted on 29 Apr. 1816 (, 2:1322).
In a brief note he signed and dated 27 Apr. 1816, Yancey reminded TJ that the $97.75 for corn had been due since 1 Dec. 1815 and that “the Rye Mr Clay is willing may Stand vs his Shop account” (RC in ViU: TJP-ER; written on a small scrap; addressed: “Mr Jefferson”; with calculation by TJ that with 5 months interest the sum due to Clay was $100.20).
