Agreement with William Ballard
William Ballard engages himself to serve Thomas Jefferson as an overseer at his place called Tufton during the year1 ensuing, to commence the 1st day of December next2 and faithfully to do his duty in that capacity: and the sd Thomas Jefferson agrees to find him six hundred weight of pork, corn bread sufficient for himself & family, and a barrel of flour, and moreover to allow him sixty five pounds as wages for the year, paiable on the sale of the crop of wheat or flour which shall be made by him. Witness their hands this 18th day of July 1813.

William Ballard (ca. 1788–1874) served as overseer at Tufton for two years, 1813–15. He later farmed in Albemarle County (Account with Ballard, 20 Oct. 1815; , 2:1312; Woods, Albemarle, 140; DNA: RG 29, CS, Albemarle Co., 1850–70; Albemarle Co. Will Book, 29:3–5, 36; Petersburg Index and Appeal, 11 Feb. 1874).
