MS (CSmH: JF); entirely in TJ’s hand; on verso: “Bank US. Mar. 10. 09”; filed with a series of notes, estimates, and expenses, with a covering sheet labeled by TJ: “Bank US. loose memms, estimates, notes Etc of my dealings with it while I lived in Washington.” Dft (CSmH: JF); entirely in TJ’s hand; undated; with additional entries, variant order, and lacking concluding comments on agreement with Madison.

As he planned here, on 10 Mar. 1809 TJ did indeed draw as indicated on the Bank of the United States (MB description begins James A. Bear Jr. and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1242–3).

In Dft TJ here estimated additional income from items sold in Washington, including a chariot (sold to Dr. Elzey for $500 on 10 Mar., MB description begins James A. Bear Jr. and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1242) and several items sold to James Madison (see TJ to Madison, 19 Apr. 1809), for a total of $4,674.775 in assets.

Reworked from “770.,” the figure in Dft.

In Dft TJ here included entries for “Ingle for Pechin 7.29/Gannin [no amount given]/ Melvin 5.” TJ paid “Gannin the barber” $6 on 11 Mar. (MB description begins James A. Bear Jr. and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1243).

Reworked from what appears to be “76.50.” Dft: “abt 20.” In Dft TJ here included an entry for “Bacon 10.”

In Dft TJ here included entries for “G. Jeff. 100./Dangerfield 590” (paid on 10 and 11 Mar.; see MB description begins James A. Bear Jr. and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1243).

In Dft TJ indicated that this payment was “for Th:J.R.” and also included three more entries, grouped by a brace, for “Julien abt 75/ Shorter 20/Th:J. 212.805,” for a total of $307.805 (first two debts paid 17 Mar. and 7 Apr.; see MB description begins James A. Bear Jr. and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1244).

Reworked from “61.35,” the amount TJ owed specifically to Dougherty (MB description begins James A. Bear Jr. and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1243), with the revised figure incorporating payments made for TJ by Dougherty to Ingle and Melvin (see note 3). Dft: “abt 80.”

Reworked from what appears to be “479.21,” with the revised figure repeated at right for clarity.
