Thomas Jefferson to Louis H. Girardin, 23 July 1816

To Louis H. Girardin

Monticello July 23. 16.

Dear Sir

I think I once saw in your hands a copy of the approbatory1 resolution of our assembly, past after the enquiry instituted by mr Nicholas, in the session of 1781.1782. you will oblige me much by a copy of it by return of mail, as I have immediate occasion to quote it. have you not a letter of mr Page’s on the skirmish at Norfolk, which I think I loosened from it’s place & sent you? I do not ask the question with a view to it’s return if you are not done with it, but from a desire only to reinstate it when done with. I salute you with constant esteem and respect.

Th: Jefferson

RC (PPAmP: Thomas Jefferson Papers); addressed: “Mr Girardin Richmond”; franked; postmarked Charlottesville, 24 July.

The Virginia General Assembly passed a resolution on 12 Dec. 1781 thanking TJ for his services as governor. A House of Delegates resolution of 12 June 1781 had called for an enquiry into TJ’s conduct in that office during the previous twelve months (PTJ description begins Julian P. Boyd, Charles T. Cullen, John Catanzariti, Barbara B. Oberg, and others, eds., The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, 1950– , 39 vols. description ends , 6:88–90, 97, 133–7). John Page’s letter to TJ of 11 Nov. [1775] describes the skirmish at Norfolk (PTJ description begins Julian P. Boyd, Charles T. Cullen, John Catanzariti, Barbara B. Oberg, and others, eds., The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, 1950– , 39 vols. description ends , 1:256–9).
