Thomas Jefferson to Louis H. Girardin, 4 March 1815

To Louis H. Girardin

Monticello Mar. 4. 15.

Th:J. to mr Girardin.

I will with pleasure examine the Cahiers you have sent me. I send you Ramsay’s revoln, La Motte, 1st Toulongeon and the last Natl Intelligencer, and am sorry that the use of these and all other resources for you1 from my library are likely to be abridged so much. within 3. weeks from this time I expect waggons will be on from Washington to recieve the library, and before that date I shall be obliged to have every book in it’s place, arranged and numbered correspondingly with the catalogue for the inspection & reciept of the agent which shall come on from the Commee. I mention this that you may consider how to make the greatest advantage of this short interval.—on the three2 desiderata mentioned in your note, I can offer nothing new. I think you told me you had sent Bezout to mr Garnet forgetting I had bespoke it. if so, I would rather not deprive him of it. I am making out a catalogue for Paris which I shall be able to recieve this summer, and I would rather send for a new edition in which I see that his Course for the Artillery is embodied with that of Navigation3 in 5. vols, & the whole for 20. francs.

RC (PPAmP: Thomas Jefferson Papers); written on a small sheet; dateline at foot of text; addressed: “Mr Girardin Glenmore.” Not recorded in SJL.

The cahiers contained the manuscript, not found, of a portion of Burk, Jones, and Girardin, History of Virginia, vol. 4. The publications enclosed with this letter included either David ramsay’s history of the American Revolution or his history of the same period in South Carolina (Sowerby, description begins E. Millicent Sowerby, comp., Catalogue of the Library of Thomas Jefferson, 1952–59, 5 vols. description ends nos. 488, 490); one of several works on a scandal just prior to the French Revolution involving Jeanne de Saint Remy de Valois, comtesse de la motte (Sowerby, description begins E. Millicent Sowerby, comp., Catalogue of the Library of Thomas Jefferson, 1952–59, 5 vols. description ends nos. 227, 2228, 2229); François Emmanuel, vicomte de toulongeon, Histoire de France, depuis la Révolution de 1789 (Paris, 1801–06; Sowerby, description begins E. Millicent Sowerby, comp., Catalogue of the Library of Thomas Jefferson, 1952–59, 5 vols. description ends no. 240; Poor, Jefferson’s Library description begins Nathaniel P. Poor, Catalogue. President Jefferson’s Library, 1829 description ends , 4 [no. 88]), 1st of 2 vols. as bound by TJ; and an unidentified issue of the Washington natl intelligencer. The agent of the congressional Joint Library Committee (the commee) coming to Monticello was Joseph Milligan. Girardin’s note, not found, is most likely the letter to TJ recorded in SJL as having been written and received on this date.
