Thomas Jefferson to Patrick Gibson, 8 July 1814, with Thomas Jefferson’s Note on Corn Contracts, 9 July 1814

To Patrick Gibson, with Note on Corn Contracts

Monticello July 8. 14.

Dear Sir

Altho’ I have not heard yet of the actual sale of my flour, yet in the hope it has taken place, and urged by some of my corn contracts, I have been obliged to draw on you this day in favor of Wm Steevens or order for 105.D. which will probably be presented to you with this advice. Accept the assurance of my esteem & respect.

Th: Jefferson

July. 9. the draught for 105. was taken in & one given for 70.D. payable to Jos. Bishop1 there are still 20.D. due.

PoC (Mr. W. B. Jefferson, San Francisco, 1946); beneath signature: “Mr Gibson”; endorsed by TJ as a letter to Gibson & Jefferson and so recorded in SJL.

TJ’s memorandum books contain a deleted record for 8 July 1814 of having drawn on Gibson & Jefferson for the transaction described above, to pay for “35. barr.” corn. The following day TJ repeated the information in his subjoined note, indicating that he had revised the original agreement and that the $20 still due to Stevens was for “30. bar. corn” (MB description begins James A. Bear Jr. and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1301). The absence of an additional message to Gibson may suggest that Bishop was to present the letter above to the firm in person, with the note TJ added to the PoC possibly describing his revision to the missing RC.

1Manuscript: “given for 70.D. payable to Jos. Bishop given.”
