To Thomas Jefferson from George Jefferson, 19 January 1809

Richmond 19th. Janr 1809

Dear Sir

Mr. Venable having been so much longer than he expected in getting an answer respecting the money which we calculated on obtaining from his friend on loan—has caused me I fear, to delay from day to day to write to you, for a longer time than I should have done: I thought it however the less necessary to write before he received an answer, as I informed you that you might be assured of getting the money in one of the ways pointed out—which I concluded would cause you to rest perfectly satisfied.—

Mr. V. is still with out an answer though in the daily expectation of receiving one.

Should we be disappointed from that source he has the promise of the sum you require, from Mr Benja Hatcher of Manchester: who, being afraid to let out his money in these lawless times, except in a way that will ensure his getting it, when ever he may require it in the regular pursuit of his business as a Merchant—consents to let you have it; but to be returned whenever he may demand it.—he expects the bank discount, which by certain ways and means, is made nearly 6.½ ⅌Cent ⅌ annum.

Should you require the money before you again hear from us, you will be pleased to sign and forward the inclosed note, which Mr. V., as well as G. & J., is to endorse.

If used, it will be renewed every 60 days, until Mr. H. requires payment.

The other loan would be more desirable, as it probably would be for a specified time.

You can draw, or direct the remittance, whenever, or in whatever manner, you think proper.

I am just setting off to Botetourt, & shall be absent for some weeks—but Mr Gibson will take pleasure in attending to your commands.

I am Dear Sir Your Very humble Servt.

Geo. Jefferson
