From John Jay to Peter Augustus Jay, 4[–5] February 1822

To Peter Augustus Jay

Bedford—4th [–5]. Feby. 1822—

Dear Peter

I have recd. your Letter of the 25th. ult—1 I am glad that the Information of your having been indisposed, was accompanied with the assurance of your being again well— may you long continue so— The State of my Health fluctuates but little— Your dear little Girl is free from complaints, and in fine Spirits—2 her being here will I think conduce to her Health; and her absence from School will be rendered unimportant by the unremitted Attentions of her Aunt Maria—

President Adams was so obliging as to send me a volume containing the Proceedings of the late Massachusetts Convention for amending their Constitution— Purchase for me a Volume of the Proceedings of our Convention— Let it be decently, but not splendidly bound; and send it by Reynolds, or Calhoun— I intend to transmit it, with a few Lines, to Mr. Adams.—3

The Sum overpaid to Mrs. Watkins will produce no Inconvenience— the Interest from Mr. Munro will replace it.—4

If among your mercantile Acquaintances, there is one engaged in the Portugal Trade, with whom it would be prudent and proper to take such a Liberty, I wish you to request him to import for me four quarter casks of dry Lisbon Wine of the first Quality— I prefer quarter Casks, because more easily transported than a Pipe—5 If necessary or adviseable, advance the probable amount of the Cost, in gold or Silver, which may be obtained from the Bank— My Love to Mary & the children— I am Dr Peter, Your very affte Father

For JJ’s brief cover letter, see JJ to JA, 11 Mar. 1822, Dft, NNC (EJ: 07478); ALS, MHi: Adams Papers: “Considering the Attention you have heretofore paid to constitutions of Government, I presume it will be agreable to you to receive the Book herewith inclosed. It exhibits a detailed account of the Proceedings and Debates of the convention which lately formed a new Constitution for this State—To you any Remarks which I might make relative to it, would be superfluous.”

4Mrs. Watkins. See JJ to PAJ, 14 Jan. 1822, above.

5“Pipe” is half a tun. “Quarter cask” probably denotes a “hogshead,” or one-quarter tun.
