From John Jay to John R. Hudson, 27 May 1822

To John R. Hudson

Bedford—West Chester County—N. York—27 May 1822—

Sir

I recd. by the last mail your Letter of the 10th. Instant,1 mentioning your having lately heard “that some Property of the late Doctor Franklin had come to Light or been received; and that no Heirs or Connections of the Doctor could be found, who were entitled legally to receive it” And as Doctr. Franklin was great uncle to your Mother, and I had been named one of his Executors, you request of me Information relative to these Circumstances.

At the Time of the Doctor’s Death, I was so occupied by official and other affairs, that I did not qualify as one of his Executors; and have had no concern with his Estate. Of the Report you mention I have no other Knowledge whatever than that which is communicated by your Letter. The Doctr. by his Will gave and devised all the Rest and Residue of his Estate real and personal (after the Payment of Debts and Legacies) to his Daughter Mrs. Bache and her Husband Mr. Richd. Bache. How they or their Children have disposed of the same, or whether any of their Descendants are living I am not informed. The Doctor had several Sisters, and I think one or more Brothers; and to me it does not appear probable that their Families have become extinct.

I regret that it is not in my Power to give you more particular Information respecting the Subjects of your Inquiries, especially considering the Circumstances which render them interesting to you I am Sir Your obt. Servt.

John Jay

John R. Hudson Esqr

ALS, NNC; Dft, NNC (EJ: 08789). Address “John R. Hudson Esqr / Newbury Port—”. Note: “18½.” Endorsed.
