From John Jay to Edward Livingston, 26 February 1823

To Edward Livingston

Bedford—West Chester County, N. York—26 Feby 1823

Dear Sir

Your Letter of the 1st. Decr.1 came to my Hands last Month— The friendly Sentiments and Feelings it expressed in it, made correspondent Impressions; and increase the Satisfaction with which I am accustomed to recollect the many Friendship and Hospitality of Clermont—

Your ^The^ Report2 presents certain Principles and Propositions, which I suspect have heretofore by ^been^ less known and considered than they deserve to be— To ascertain how far, and with what Limitations, they might prudently be submitted to the Test of experience, ^not only^ requires profound Consideration, and ^but also a^ correct Knowledge of the actual circumstances of the State & the Population of of and of the character of the Population— These however are Subjects ^on^ which I am not in Capacity to form or venture opinions. During the Winter my Health has continued to decline; and been such, as not only to confine me to the House, but occasionally to my Chamber— The Term of my Lease has expired, and I am holding over— How long I shall be permitted to do so, depends on Him, without whose will not a Sparrow falls to the Ground— May you experience his Blessings both here and hereafter— I am Dr Sr, Your Friend & obt. Servt

The Honble Edwd. Livingston Esqr New Orleans—

Dft, NNC (EJ: 08324).
