Mr. Jay presents his Compliments to his Excellency General Washington, & sends him herewith inclosed the 1 vol. of the Fœderalist—1

AL, DLC: Washington (EJ: 10394). Endorsed. Dft, NNC (EJ: 8425). Dft omits “his Excellency.” Enclosure: The Federalist, printed by John and Archibald M’Lean (New York, 22 Mar. 1788), vol. 1.

1. GW acknowledged receipt of the volume on 15 Apr., ALS, ICN: Ruggles (EJ: 13397). On this date JJ also forwarded a copy of volume 1 to William Bingham. See Bingham to JJ, 29 Jan. 1788, and note 1, above.
