From John Jay to William Miller, 24 November 1815

To William Miller

Bedford 24 Novr 1815

Dr Sir

I have recd. your Letter of the 12th. of this Month.1 Having for more than a Fortnight, been ill of the Cold or Influenza, which prevails this Season very generally; I find myself feeble, and unable to write or read much without Fatigue.

I cannot however let Garret return, without committing to his Care a few Lines in answer to yours.—

You are right in supposing that at your age much additional Time is not to be expected. You have lived beyond, and I have arrived at, the ordinary Term of human Life in this world. We nevertheless have the comfort of reflecting, that a better world than this, is prepared for those who will accept of it on the Terms on which it is mercifully offered to us—

I am sorry to hear that Mr Williamson died on the Visit he made to his Son;2 and that some of your Family are sick— I hope our next Tidings from Chenango will be more agreable, and assure us of the Health and Welfare of you all— That this may be the Case, is the sincere wish of Dr Sir, your Friend & obt Servt

Wm. Miller Esqr chenango—

Dft, NNC (EJ: 09639).

1William Miller to JJ, 12 Nov. 1815, not found.

2Possibly William Williamson (1757–1815), of Greene, N.Y.
