From John Jay to Peter Augustus Jay, 13 August 1816

To Peter Augustus Jay

Bedford—13th. Augt. 1816

Dear Peter

I have recd. your Letter of the 9th. Inst—1 on Saturday last Mr. Hach [alia]h Bailey2 was here, & paid the Int[eres]t. that was due— He mentioned his having intended to pay the Principal, and that a Sum to the amount ^of it,^ had probably been paid to you on his acct.; but that certain Circumstances induced him to apprehend that it would be convenient to him to postpone the Payment— It seems that he has not removed to New York— He mentioned that he should go there ^this^ week— I gave him a Letter to you, submitting a Settlmt. with him to your Discretion—

In case the money should be paid, you will dispose of it in the Manner which you may think adviseable— The most secure way would be on mortgage to the am[oun]t. of double the Sum in Value— and Money being scarce in the City, I suppose there would be no Difficulty, in placing it there on such Security.

As to the Kemeys affair, I concur in opinion with you— Decision regulated by Prudence, will I presume terminate it without Loss.—

I shall enclose a Letter for Sr. John Sinclair— Let me know when, and by what vessel you forward it.— I have recd. from him a Paper on “mildew in wheat”, which I shall send You to have published in a newspaper— let it be published, without any Reference to me3

John is well, and behaves well— but is not yet in Love with his Book— Aunt Symmes, Mrs. Watts, and Mrs. Romaine arrived this morning— when your aunt returns it is probable that Maria and Nancy will accompany her as far as N. York— we are still embarrassed by the frequent Lameness of one of our Horses. This circumstance has made it necessary to postpone the Visit which some of your Sisters are desirous to make to our Friends at Rye— I regret it the more as I think such occasional Excursions would conduce to Maria’s Health— We are all as well as we were at the Date of my last— I hope your Horse has recovered— if not, I suspect the sooner he is relieved from Flies & Farriers the better— I am Dear Peter your very affte. Father

John Jay

Peter Augustus Jay Esqr.
Our Love to Mary.
