From John Jay to Peter R. Livingston, 9 March 1813

To Peter R. Livingston

Bedford 9th. March 1813

Sir

I recd. by the last mail, your Letter of the 26 Ult.1 informing me of the Death of Chancellor Livingston.—

This Event awakens ^combined with^ the Recollection of past Days & Incidents which Together ^and^ with the his having expressed the Sentiments of me that ^that^ you mention, excites Feelings too ^which (being^ obvious and natural) to need Description need not be described

May He who blessed him with Hope and Composure, in the most trying of all Hours, administer Consolation to his afflicted Family. Assure them that I cordially reciprocate their friendly Disposition towards me— My Esteem and Regard for Mrs. Livingston, never underwent any change; but continues unaltered. I retain too strong a Sense of former Friendship— and of the attentions which in early Life I recd. from the Chancellors worthy and amiable Parents, not to feel an Interest in the Welfare of all their Descendants, who respect and inherit their Virtues—

That we may all be so guided thro “the Valley of the Shadow of Death, as to fear no Evil”2 is the fervent wish of Sir Your obedt. Servt

Peter R. Livingston Esqr

Dft, NNC (EJ: 08318).

2Psalm 23: 4 reads, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil”.
