From John Jay to Peter Augustus Jay, 23 April 1816

To Peter Augustus Jay

Bedford—23 April 1816.

Dear Peter

I have recd. your Letter of the 15 Inst:1 and am glad that your legislative Labors are terminated— some good has been done, and more might have been. I hope your Health continues unimpaired— if there be even any Doubts of this, let not professional Business tempt you to neglect it, and thereby render yourself more and more unable to endure the Fatigue of applying closely to such Affairs.—

It gave us pleasure to learn from Mr. Kean and Mr. VB. Livingston2 that Mary and all the children with her, were well last week.—

I have read the Letter from Mr. Nash, but am not in a Situation to be of active Service to the Business mentioned in it.—

Your having declined being a Candidate at the next Election, meets with my approbation— In my opinion your Duty does not at present either require, or authorize a Sacrifice of that Kind.—

Unless the Federalists should make strenuous Exertions in favor of Mr. King, I think they will not do Justice to the State or to him.

A Society for Sunday Schools has been instituted at New York— I have recd. a Letter on the Subject from Mr. Eleazar Lord their Secretary, at No. 3 Nassau Street— add my name to the List of their Life Subscribers, and pay 15 Dolrs.—3

My Health remains very much the same— Nancy is suffering from Tooth Ache, and Wm. recovering from a Cold— The Rest of us are as usual— My Love to Mary and the Children I am Dear Peter, Your very affte. Father

John Jay
