From John Jay to Samuel Bayard, 5 February 1816

To Samuel Bayard

Bedford—West Chester County—5 Feb. 1816

Dr Sr

I recd. ^by the^ last mail the circular Letter of ^the^ 17 Jany last ^ult^ from the Presidt. of the New Jersey Bible Society to ^me as Presidt of^ the one in this County, proposing that ^a meeting^ of Delegates from all the Bible Societies in the U.S. be held at ^the city of^ NYork on the second Wednesday in May next, to consider ^of^ and devise a Plan for ^rendering^ the Cooperation of the Christian Community of the U.S. in distributing the Scriptures, that shall be more efficient than the present.1

The 4 Wednesday Day of May next is the Day appointed for the next meeting of our Society— As that Day is posterior to the one named for the general meeting at NYork, and no Provision having been made for calling special meetings of our Society, it consequently will not be in their power to send Delegates to it—

For my own ^part^ individually, I concur in opinion with Mr. Boudinot that the object he has in view is important, and I wish it may be attained—

This [illegible] being able It would give me Pleasure to be at New York at the Time of the meeting, but such has long been the State of my Health that nearly Eight Years have elapsed since I was there—

Be pleased to assure Mr. Boudinot of my best wishes for the speedy & perfect Recovery of his Health, and believe to be with Esteem & Regard Dr Sr Your obt servt
