From Alexander Hamilton to Tench Coxe, 29 December 1794

To Tench Coxe

Treasury Department, December 29, 1794. “In answer to your letter of the 26 instant, I remark, that it is not clear the words ‘the thirtieth day of June next’ may not be understood as equivalent to the ‘next thirtieth day of June’1 which last would conform to the known intent of the Legislature. At least this is a point to be referred to the President. It will naturally come up when the new arrangement of compensations is presented to his consideration.”

ALS, RG 58, General Records, 1791–1803, National Archives.

1H is referring to Section 13 of “An Act making further provision for securing and collecting the Duties on foreign and domestic Spirits, Stills, Wines and Teas” (1 Stat. description begins The Public Statutes at Large of the United States of America (Boston, 1845). description ends 380 [June 5, 1794]). For this section, see Coxe to H, July 15, 1794, note 4.
