ALS, Hamilton Papers, Library of Congress.

1Bancker, a merchant, had succeeded Peter Livingston as treasurer of the State of New York, a post which he retained until his death in 1798.

3On November 2, 1781, the Continental Congress estimated the revenue required for 1782 at eight million dollars and apportioned the sum among the states by quotas according to population. New York’s quota was set at $373,598. Quarterly requisitions were to be made for the amount due from each state (JCC description begins Journals of the Continental Congress, 1774–1789 (Washington, 1904–1937). description ends , XXI, 1089–91).
