You are, I believe, acquainted with The Reverend Mr. Mason1 who will deliver you this. I could not let him depart without placing him under the protection of your friendship. He is in every sense a man of rare merit.

1John Mitchell Mason became pastor of the Scotch Presbyterian Church on Cedar Street in New York City in 1793. It 1795 he became a trustee of Columbia College. In 1801 he went to Great Britain to collect books for a seminary which he later established in New York and which became the Union Theological Seminary.
