To Benjamin Franklin from Dumas, 17 March 1780

From Dumas

ALS: American Philosophical Society

Lahaie 17 Mars 1780

Monsieur

I 475. 621. 873. 134. 610. 193. 17. & I 942. 807. 470. if I can.9 My 1st. Letter will tell you more of it.

[Note numbering follows the Franklin Papers source.]

7Probably the elegant reprinting of the 1579 Union of Utrecht (which established the United Provinces of the Netherlands) and supporting documents entitled Extract uyt de resolutien de Edele Mogende Heeren Raaden van Staate der Vereenigde Nederlanden … (Haarlem, 1778); a copy is at Yale University Library.

8The Haarlem firm of Johannes Enschedé and Sons was the premier typefoundry of Holland. They undoubtedly sent BF a copy of their latest specimen book, Proef van letteren … (Harlem, 1768). An earlier edition (1757) had been translated into French, but BF, in his answer to Dumas of March 29, identified the fonts that interested him by their Dutch names. For a history of the firm, which still exists, see Harry Carter’s chapter, “A Short History of the Firm,” in Johannes Enschedé en Zonen, The House of Enschedé 1703–1953 (Haarlem, 1953), pp. xxxi–lxi.

9“I know now the Breast of Capt. Guillon & [I] will serve it if I …” BF first decoded this sentence on the notation sheet, mistaking Dumas’ scrawly second “I” for a “3,” which stood for Van der Capellen. He realized his mistake, and interlined an accurate translation above the numbers on the ALS.

1Dumas undoubtedly included a covering letter for Jones (Bradford, Jones Papers, reel 5, no. 1023) and a March 15 letter to the committee for foreign affairs in which he enclosed a draft Dutch-American commercial treaty on which he had been working for the last year and asked for diplomatic powers to negotiate on behalf of the United States: XXVIII, 551 (and frequent subsequent mentions); Wharton, Diplomatic Correspondence, III, 549. The packet is discussed further in Dumas’ letter of March 23, below.
