To Benjamin Franklin from Dumas, 15 January 1784

From Dumas

ALS:1 Library of Congress

La haie 15e. Janv. 1784.

Monsieur

C. W. f. Dumas

A Son Excellence Mr. Franklin M.P. des E.U.

1The bottom half of the sheet, beneath the signature, is missing. As a consequence, only a small portion of the address (written on the verso) is visible.

2JA had received word from his Dutch bankers on Dec. 29 that Morris had sent them new drafts totaling 750,000 f., which they would have to protest for insufficient funds. JA and JQA set out for Holland on Jan. 2, 1784, reaching The Hague on Jan. 12: Adams Correspondence, V, 316n; Adams Papers, XV, 432–6, 438.

3Doubtless the Jan. 15 postscript to his dispatch no. 37; see the annotation of Dumas to BF, Jan. 9.
