From Henry Dearborn

July 8th. 1802

Sir

Will you be pleased to note such of the books & Instruments in Majr. Williams,s list herewith enclosed, as may with propriety be purchased for the School at West point.

with respectfull considerations I am Sir Your Obedt Servt

H. Dearborn

RC (DLC); at foot of text: “The President of the United States”; endorsed by TJ as received from the War Department on 8 July and “books for the school at West point” and so recorded in SJL. Enclosure not found, but see below.

TJ apparently made his reply directly on Jonathan Williams’s enclosed list of BOOKS & INSTRUMENTS, then returned it to Dearborn. In a letter to Williams of 9 July, Dearborn wrote, “You will observe the notes made by the President on the Margin of your list,” and authorized him to purchase “such Books and Instruments as may be obtained and the Bill will be paid” (FC in Lb in DNA: RG 107, LSMA).

Also on 8 July, Dearborn sent TJ a letter recommending the promotion of Williams to lieutenant colonel, Decius Wadsworth to major, and George Washington Varnum to first lieutenant, all in the Corps of Engineers (FC in Lb in DNA: RG 107, LSP; not recorded in SJL). Later that same day, Dearborn informed the three officers that the president had approved their appointments (FCs in Lb in DNA: RG 107, LSMA).
