On 16 June Gallatin evaluated the offices described by Coxe above, referring to them as the “seven Offices applied for by T. Coxe..” He recommended that TJ offer Coxe the combined positions of inspector and collector of internal revenues in Philadelphia—“N. 5.” See TJ to Coxe, 17 June, and Coxe to TJ, 24 June 1801, for TJ’s offer and Coxe’s refusal of the office. At the urging of Peter Muhlenberg, Coxe accepted the position of internal revenue collector in place of James Ash in the fall of 1801 (Cooke, Coxe, 399–400).
