To James Madison from Sylvanus Bourne, 8 July 1806 (Abstract)

From Sylvanus Bourne, 8 July 1806 (Abstract)

§ From Sylvanus Bourne. 8 July 1806, Amsterdam. “Inclosed I transmit you the latest Leyden Gazettes, the most interesting relations they contain are relative to the new order of things just established in this Country: indeed Europe offers nothing specially new exclusive of the correspondence said to exist between England & France the object of which gives rise to various conjectures. Those who look forward to a peace between the two Countries as the result thereof—may be said to indulge a pleasing reverie which I fear cannot be soon realized at least with the hopes of any long duration, & for many of the parties, a continuation of the war may be preferable to such a peace as can only tend to deceive & ensnare.”

RC (DNA: RG 59, CD, Amsterdam, vol. 1). 1 p.; docketed “8 July 1806” by Wagner. Dated 8 July 1805 by Bourne and filed there; date assigned here based on internal evidence and Wagner’s docket. Filed with the RC is a translation of the Batavian prize regulations issued on 8 Aug. 1798 (8 pp.).
