Head Quarters Robinsons House 20th Augt 1780

Dear Sir

The Inclosed Copy of a Letter from Coll Wells this Moment came to hand, as it contains Intelligence which may be of Importance I send off an Express with it.

Your Excellency’s Letter of Yesterday received this Morning shall pay particular Attention to it. I have the Honor to be very Respectfully Your Excellency’s most obedient and very humble Servant

Greenwich 18th August 1780


I recd your favor of the 16th Instant & Express containing your Orders respecting the Troops stationed at this Place &c.

I have this Moment recd Intelligence from good Authority, that General Clinton is on his way towards the East End of long Island, that he was on the 16th Instant at a place call’d Bethpage the British Troops at White Stone were then embarking three Regiments were embarked from the City of New York and a very hot Press was going on there for the Sea service on teusday last.

The Importance of communicating This Intelligence induces me to forward this [favor than] in my Power to make the Returns required in yours, shall forward them as soon as possible and as regularly as my Situation will admit. I am with due Respect Your [   ] most ob. Srt

I am of opinion that there might be several British Officers taken from long Island by a very small force. I should be happy to receive your Honors Order in the Matter.
