To George Washington from Philip Van Cortlandt, 4 April 1780

Camp April. 4. 1780

Lieut. Gilbert J. Livingston of my Regiment having for a long time past been subject to a rumatick complaint which still continues so as to render him at times unfit for service (altho in other respects a good Officer which carracter he is Justly intitled to) he having for the Above reasons requested me to Certify my approbation of his leaving the Service which I hereby do provided it is agreable to his Excellency Genl Washington.
