George Washington Papers

To George Washington from Edmund Randolph, 5 February 1795

From Edmund Randolph

Department of State February 5. 1795.

The Secretary of State has the honor of returning to the President, the papers respecting the Ship of War to be built in Georgia. Nothing seems to be further necessary on the part of the President, unless perhaps it be to say to the Department, which has the principal superintendance of the Business, that a minute attention to economy is peculiarly desirable; and that it is recommended, that the particulars, stated in Mr Coxe’s communication, should be reviewed, and every possible saving made.1

L, DNA: RG 59, Miscellaneous Letters; LB, DNA: RG 59, GW’s Correspondence with His Secretaries of State; LB, DNA: RG 59, Domestic Letters. The letter is in the writing of State Department clerk George Taylor, Jr.

1Randolph presumably was returning Pierce Butler’s letter to GW of 30 Nov. 1794 and the reports generated thereon. For Tench Coxe’s report to Alexander Hamilton of 25–27 Dec., see GW to Henry Knox, 23 Dec. 1794, n.2. See also Hamilton’s third letter to GW of 21 January.
