D, ViHi: Custis Papers. The manuscript of the consolidated inventory, in John Mercer’s hand, is arranged in five columns: (1) the number of each entry, running from 1 to 399; (2) the item or items in each entry of this inventory, often followed by a number or numbers referring to other entries in the inventory; (3) a number corresponding to the number of an entry in the Combined County Inventory (doc. III-A–1) and in the table of disposition of goods (doc. III-A–5); (4) the appraised value, taken from doc. III-A–1, of the item or items in the entry; and (5) data, most often taken from doc. III-A–5 (but see also doc. III-A–3), relating to the sale or assignment of items in some of the entries. Mercer heads his second column “Inventory,” his fourth “appraised,” and his last “sold for.” He lists the items in the inventory alphabetically, and he has 406 entries instead of the numbered 399 because there are two nos. 31 and two nos. 212, 213, 214, 215, 216, and 217.

Mercer, then, derived this consolidated inventory from the Combined County Inventory (III-A–1) and the table of disposition of goods (III-A–5); he incorporated data taken from the various accounts of items of the estate either used or sold by the heirs (appendices A and B and docs. III-A–2, III-A–3, and III-A–4); and he in one way or another keyed his inventory to all of these other inventories and accounts. Most of the information contained in the consolidated inventory can be gleaned from one or another of these primary documents, but the consolidated inventory does provide new data and, as Mercer intended, serves as a convenient guide to the other documents.

In the printing of Mercer’s inventory, the tabular form has been abandoned. Instead, the data for each entry is presented sequentially with a period after the entry number and dashes to reflect the original divisions in columns. The first three entries with their explanatory notes demonstrate how the document is constructed and how it is to be read. Note 7 also should be consulted. When needed, the name of the item or the word “ditto” has been inserted in square brackets; bracketed words in quotation marks are taken from Appendix A or B.

The number after the first dash (in Mercer’s third column) always refers to the entry assigned that number in the Combined County Inventory (doc. III-A–1) and in the table of disposition of goods (doc. III-A–5). In this case, no. 224 in doc. III-A–1 is “1 Screw Jack and an old Anchor £1.5”; doc. III-A–5 indicates that the items in entry 224 were distributed between GW, for 3s., and John Parke Custis, for £1.2; and Appendix A notes that the anchor was valued at £1.2 and retained by the estate. Mercer’s wrong placement, in entries 1 through 5, of the numbers belonging in column 3 has been corrected in the printed version.

The pound, shilling, and pence signs have been added when needed for clarity.

Occasionally, as here, Mercer gives in the last column the amount charged to GW or to “P” for an item or items and, more often, what the item or items were sold for (see note 4).

After the third dash in an entry (Mercer’s fifth column headed “sold for”), numbers between 104 and 189 refer to the list of items sold at Williamsburg in October 1759 (Appendix B). Scraps of memoranda in the Custis Papers confirm that numbers below 104 in this column, as no. 34 here, refer to a similar sale list, or lists, which have not been found. Mercer always prefixed the figures referring to sale lists with “No.” Often the sale list number is followed by figures indicating the amount for which the item or items were sold.

The numbers (214 and 292) appearing after the description of the item or items in the entry (“Do 3 pr &c.”) and before the first dash (i.e., in Mercer’s second column) refer to entries in this inventory itself. The items listed in 214 and 292 are the items lumped under “&c.,” as reference to entry 57 in doc. III-A–1 demonstrates.

The number 76 refers to the number of awl blades, not to another entry.

I.e., see columns 2, 3, 4 (described in the source note) in item 6 above. Sometimes, as in entry 85, information about the sale of the item (column 5) is given in a cross-reference entry such as this. In such cases, a semicolon is inserted after the cross referral, followed by the data regarding sales taken from Mercer’s fifth column.

Entry 107 in Appendix B reports the sale of “1 Tin Basket & other Lumber” to John Greenhow for 11s. at the estate sale in Williamsburg in October 1759. See note 4.

The number, or amount, “3/5” is written after the number 99 in the “Sold for” column. See note 10.

To the right of the “Sold for” column in entries 21 and 22, the amounts are added up, perhaps indicating the items in entry 21 were sold in three lots (nos. 32, 99, 84) for 3s., 11s. 5d., and 8s. respectively and that the items in entry 22 were sold in two lots (85 and 138) for a total of £1.5 (25s.).

Elsewhere in the Custis Papers in an undated memorandum, Mercer wrote “30[.] Books sold for 18s. 6d.” See headnote of Appendix D: List of Books in the Estate.

Mercer has two entries numbered 31.

Mercer wrote the number 113 in the margin between the numbers 61 and 62.

The number 103 is in the margin between numbers 65 and 66.

“No. 6 £11.0.6” is bracketed to indicate that the items in 70 and 71 together were sold for that amount.

Below this entry Mercer wrote “V. 85.”

The word “lumber” is used here in its sense of miscellaneous or insignificant articles.

“1 V 31” appears to have a line drawn through it.

Mercer wrote “85” above “yds.”

Mercer repeated the numbers 212 through 217.

Brackets in the manuscript indicate that the items in 231 and 232 together sold for £3.5.

“82” is the number of “Milkpans.”

Item 179 in Appendix B records the sale of five pictures to John Grainger for 4s. 6d.

Plain is a kind of flannel.

Entries 289 and 290 are bracketed to indicate that John Greenhow bought both parcels of rope for this amount.

The number 238 is the number of sheep included in this item, and £56.16 is their appraised value. No number was assigned to this entry in the Combined County Inventory (III-A–1), and therefore there is no numbered entry for the sheep in the table (doc. III-A–5).

A spancel is a fetter for hobbling horses or livestock.

The figure £3 may have been crossed out.
