The first of the two sheets, headed “The Country in Acct—with George Washington,” is endorsed “[A Copy of my 1st] acct handed to the Committee October £183.1.9.” “A Copy of my 1st” in brackets is taken from Toner, Journal of Colonel Washington description begins J. M. Toner, ed. Journal of Colonel George Washington, Commanding a Detachment of Virginia Troops, Sent by Robert Dinwiddie, Lieutenant-Governor of Virginia, across the Alleghany Mountains, in 1754, to Build Forts at the Head of the Ohio. Albany, 1893. description ends , 183.

GW arrived in Williamsburg on 21 Oct. and left on 2 Nov. 1754. During that time he delivered up these accounts to the “committee of directors” of the assembly, whose responsibility it was to supervise the expenses of the Virginia Regiment, and then resigned his commission as colonel of the Virginia Regiment. See William Fitzhugh to GW, 4 Nov. 1754, n.1.

1. On 2 April GW led his troops out of Alexandria on the march to the Ohio, during which time he made chronological notes of their progress. See Diaries description begins Donald Jackson and Dorothy Twohig, eds. The Diaries of George Washington. 6 vols. Charlottesville, Va., 1976–79. description ends , 1:174–210. Edward Thompson’s home later became the site of the town of Hillsboro, in Loudoun County.

2. The “late Engagement” was the battle and capitulation at Fort Necessity, 3–4 July. GW arrived in Williamsburg on 17 July.

4. On 11 Sept. Dinwiddie ordered Capt. Andrew Lewis to take “a detachmt of 40 or 50 Men” into Augusta County to protect the British inhabitants on the frontier from French and Indian marauders (ViHi: Dinwiddie Papers). See also Dinwiddie to GW, 11 Sept. 1754. By 1 Oct. Lewis, with 2 officers and 56 enlisted men, had marched for Augusta (A Pay Bill of the Detachment . . . of Captn Lewis, 29 July–29 Sept. 1754, DLC:GW).
