25. Crossd James River & by Rain was forcd to lodge at one Captn. Stowe’s.

GW crossed at Hog Island, about six miles south of Williamsburg (ledger a description begins Manuscript Ledger Book 1, 1750-72, in George Washington Papers, Library of Congress. description ends , 281). Captain Stowe may have been Joseph Stowe, a ship captain who sailed out of Virginia in the wine trade (Va. Gaz., 24–31 Aug. 1739, and P&D, 29 Sept. 1768).
