James Madison Papers

From James Madison to Thomas Newton, 11 June 1806

Department of State June 11. 1806.

I enclose a copy of a letter from the British Envoy, complaining of the illegal equipment of two Schooners at Hampton with the intent to cruise upon the British trade. I therefore request you to make a careful examination into the circumstances alledged, and to prosecute every contravention of the laws, which may be disclosed. I am &c.
