§ From John Armstrong. 3 February 1814, War Department. “I have the honor to lay before you a list of appointments which have been made in the Army of the United States during the Recess of the Senate.”

RC and enclosure (DNA: RG 46, Executive Proceedings, Nominations, 13B-A2); letterbook copy and letterbook copy of enclosure (DNA: RG 107, LSP). RC 1 p.; in a clerk’s hand, signed by Armstrong. The enclosure (7 pp.; printed in Senate Exec. Proceedings, description begins Journal of the Executive Proceedings of the Senate of the United States of America (3 vols.; Washington, 1828). description ends 2:476–79) included two hundred and fifty-one appointments in the Corps of Engineers, dragoons, artillery, infantry, Regiment of Riflemen, Sea Fencibles, and Rangers. JM forwarded the list to the Senate in a message dated 16 Feb. 1814, together with Armstrong’s second letter of 3 Feb. and one of 10 Feb. 1814 (ibid., 2:475, 480, 492).
