J. Madison presents his respects to Doctor Mason with the promised copy of Mr. Hamilton’s observations1 in the Genl. Convention, on the subject of a federal Constitution as noted at the time.

RC and enclosure (DLC, series 6). Enclosure (14 pp.) is a clerk’s transcript of JM’s notes on debates at the Federal Convention for 18 June 1787 (printed in Farrand, Records of the Federal Convention, 1:282–93). On the last page of the transcript JM wrote, “The above is a literal extract from my notes of the proceedings of the General Convention which met in Philada. in 1787. James Madison / Jany. 12. 1810.”
