MS (ViU: TJP-ER); written in Cabell’s hand on a scrap; undated; endorsed by TJ: “Cabell Dr George”; with an unrelated 1812 account in Cabell’s hand on verso.

George Cabell (1766–1823), physician and surgeon, attended Hampden-Sydney College and in 1790 received a medical degree from the University of the State of Pennsylvania (later the University of Pennsylvania). He established a medical practice in the vicinity of Lynchburg and cared for Patrick Henry during the latter’s final illness. Cabell also maintained a fleet of bateaux that he employed in transporting tobacco on the James River. In 1805 the Virginia General Assembly authorized him to construct a public tobacco warehouse, known as Blackwater, on his property at the junction of the Blackwater and James rivers in Campbell County, near Lynchburg. Cabell’s business venture prospered and enabled him to construct a mansion he named Point of Honor (Alexander Brown, The Cabells and their Kin, 2d ed., rev. [1939; repr. 1994], 262–4; Catalogue of the Medical Graduates of the University of Pennsylvania [1839], 15; Chambers, Poplar Forest description begins S.
