I send to You, Dear & Respected Sir, some books of Mr Joseph Cabell’s, which Col. Randolph tells me he would like to read—Perhaps, they may also amuse some of Your moments—I am sure Mr Cabell will be pleased with my leaving them at Monticello. Col. Randolph has promised to return them to Mr Cabell where and when he may chuse.—

I wish You complete relief from Your troublesome Bibliography—and Salute You with most affectionate Respect.

Girardin’s list included Georges cuvier, Leçons d’Anatomie Comparée, 5 vols. (Paris, 1800–05; Sowerby, description begins E. Millicent Sowerby, comp., Catalogue of the Library of Thomas Jefferson, 1952–59, 5 vols. description ends no. 999); Jean Claude de Lamétherie (la metherie), Théorie de La Terre (Paris, 1795); and Karl Ludwig Willdenow (wildenow), Species Plantarum, 5 vols. (Berlin, 1797–1810). The work on chemical nomenclature was George Pearson, A Translation of the Table of Chemical Nomenclature, proposed by de Guyton, formerly de Morveau, Lavoisier, Bertholet and de Fourcroy, with additions and alterations (London, 1794; 2d ed. London, 1799), and that on flora was Johann Rudolf Suter, Flora Helvetica: Exhibens Plantas Helvetiae Indigenas Hallerianas, et Omnes quae Nuper Detectae sunt Ordine Linnaeano (Zurich, 1802; Joseph C. Cabell’s autographed copy is at ViU). The publication of linné was Johann Andreas Murray, ed., Caroli a Linné … Systema Vegetabilium secundum Classes Ordines Genera Species cum Characteribus et Differentiis (Göttingen, 1774). The tableau was René Louiche Desfontaines, Tableau de l’École de Botanique du Muséum d’Histoire Naturelle (Paris, 1804).
