MS (MHi); entirely in TJ’s hand; partially dated; endorsed by TJ: “Taxable property Feb. 1815.”

TJ, Christopher hudson, and Mary Stith held shares in a 400-acre tract known as the Limestone Survey and situated along the Hardware River in Albemarle County (TJ to Stith, 7 Mar. 1811; TJ’s List of Landholdings and Monticello Slaves, [ca. 1811–1812]; TJ to Robert Anderson, 13 June 1819).

TJ also prepared an undated summary of state and federal tax rates for 1815, with the former based explicitly on the Richmond Enquirer’s 24 Dec. 1814 printing of the 21 Dec. Virginia “Act imposing Taxes for the Support of Government” (Acts of Assembly [1814–15 sess.], 3–8) and the latter limited to taxes on carriages and furniture (MS in MoSHi: TJC-BC; written entirely in TJ’s hand on a small scrap).

1TJ erased “1.” from the amount column for this entry.
