MS (CSmH: JF); written entirely in TJ’s hand on a reused address cover to TJ; undated.

The earliest of the debts listed above dates from 14 Nov. 1810, when TJ received a letter of 1 Nov. from John Wayles Eppes advising him that he owed $140.85 to the executors of Osgood hanbury for an old debt of TJ’s father-in-law John Wayles. TJ revised that entry no earlier than 31 July 1812, when he learned the amount for which John Wickham was responsible as surety for court costs that TJ was due in the aftermath of the dismissal of the suit of Livingston v. Jefferson (note to TJ to William Marshall, 13 July 1812). TJ probably began compiling this list of outstanding obligations early in 1812, after he agreed to buy a mule from Charles Vest for $55 on 6 Jan. and before he paid for the purchase on 4 June 1812 (MB description begins James A. Bear Jr. and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1279). He may have added to it from time to time and he evidently inserted check marks in the left margin to indicate which debts he had satisfied. TJ’s failure to place a check mark next to his $71.32 debt to Clifton Rodes “for cows bought last year” suggests that he had ceased revising this memorandum by 5 Aug. 1812, when he arranged to have this sum paid by Gibson & Jefferson. That terminal date is also confirmed by TJ’s leaving blank the amount due to Richmond grocers James & William cochran, to whom he ordered payment of $33.43 by Gibson & Jefferson on 14 Aug. 1812 “for groceries & 6. pr. cotton cards.” These payments are entered in MB description begins James A. Bear Jr. and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1281, 1282, and were probably discussed in missing letters of 5 Aug. from TJ to Patrick Gibson and 14 Aug. 1812 from TJ to Gibson & Jefferson that are recorded in SJL. Other transactions listed here are accounted for in MB description begins James A. Bear Jr. and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends and in correspondence in these volumes.
