On his return from Kentucky, Short stopped off at prestwould, the estate in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, owned by his uncle Peyton Skipwith (George Green Shackelford, Jefferson’s Adoptive Son: The Life of William Short, 1759-1848 [Lexington, Ky., 1993], 140-1).
