2Edmund Sawyer had been appointed surveyor of the port of Pasquotank Bridge in the District of Camden, North Carolina, on February 9, 1789 (Executive Journal, I description begins Journal of the Executive Proceedings of the Senate (Washington, 1828), I. description ends , 37, 39). On February 20, 1797, the Senate confirmed the nomination of Mathias E. Sawyer to fill the position left vacant when Edmund Sawyer died (Executive Journal, I description begins Journal of the Executive Proceedings of the Senate (Washington, 1828), I. description ends , 226).
