[Pittsfield, Massachusetts, February 1, 1792. On April 20, 1792, Hamilton wrote to Van Schaack: “I received your letter of the 1st of February.” Letter not found.]

1. Van Schaack was banished from New York State during the American Revolution because of his Loyalist sympathies. He moved to Massachusetts, first settling in Richmond and then in Pittsfield. He was a close friend and correspondent of Philip Schuyler, James Duane, and several other New Yorkers who were well known to H.
