Il a souvent eté dans le cas de traitter vos soldats et il l’a fait avec zele et avec succès. Il aime vos compatriotes et en est aimé. L’ouvrage qu’il vous presente prouve l’estime qu’ils ont eue pour lui.7 Je vous prie donc de le bien recevoir au nom de notre chere amerique, dont mon cœur sera toujours citoyen

6. Jean-François Coste (1741–1819), first physician of Rochambeau’s army, who after the Battle of Yorktown treated American as well as French wounded. Chastellux, who fell seriously ill in America, credited Coste with saving his life. In 1782 both men received honorary degrees from the University of the State of Pennsylvania and the College of William and Mary.
