The two enclos’d letters & two more that we forward you under a blank covert have been deliver’d us this day by the Honble. John Adams whose agreable company we have since last saturday, so wish they may come safe to hand.3 Said Gentn. intends to sett out for Paris to morow. & In hopes of his reaching it soon after a prosperous journey beg leave to repeatt the tenders of our best services & subscrive respectfully Sir Your most obt. Servt.

3JA had written BF on Dec. 8, above, that he carried dispatches from Congress. The peace commissioner-designate dined with members of the Gardoqui family during his Jan. 15–20 stay in Bilbao, and later wrote to thank the firm (XVIII, 196n) for “the Thousand Civilities and essential assistance” they had rendered: Butterfield, John Adams Diary, II, 431–3; Adams Papers, VIII, 312.
