M. de Chaumont a L’honneur de prevenir S. Ex. Monsieur le Docteur franklin qu’il sera peutestre Necessaire de Retarder Le Depart du Vaisseau le Bonhomme Richard Capitaine Jones afin de luy former un meilleur Equipage,3 et en Ce Cas M. de Sartines desire que M. franklin veuille Bien donner Ses ordres au Sr. Landais Commandant la fregatte americaine L’alliance, de partir incessament de L’orient pour Croiser Jusqu’a la fin de 7bre. dans le Nord de L’ecosse.

3. Through the Lorient merchant Gourlade, Jones had asked Chaumont to apply to the French naval ministry for additional seamen for the Bonhomme Richard; see Jones to BF, July 12. Jones also wrote Chaumont directly on July 14; Chaumont’s reply of five days later relayed orders from Sartine to remove all Englishmen from the crew and, if possible, to replace them with other foreigners: Bradford, Jones Papers, reel 4, nos. 680, 689.
