Adams Papers

From John Adams to William Cunningham, 21 May 1789

New york May 21 1789—

Dear Sir—

I have received your kind letter of the fifth of this month by the hand of Capt Gustavus Fellows. This Gentleman’s application will be made as all others are and ought to be, to the President whose province it is in the first instance, to judge of the merits of all Candidates for Office and Employment—His Character is fair as far as I have ever heard, but as there are many more Candidates than Offices some of them must of course be disappointed—

I am obliged to you for giving me this opportunity of thanking you for your benevolent Wishes and of presenting my regards to your Family & Connections. I am with sentiments of Esteem Sir Your Humble Servant

John Adams—
