Adams Papers

To John Adams from Epes Sargent, 26 January 1789

Glocester Jany: 26 1789

My very worthy Friend Mr Murray has give me a fresh proof of his attachment, by the obliging manner in which he has done me the honour to introduce me to your Excellency: In the new arrangements that will take place under the Federal Government, I am induced to sollicit the interest and influence of your Excellency for the place of Naval Officer, or the principal department of the Customs for this Port; my pretensions and responsibility to this place are subjects of so delicate a nature as forbid me particularly to dilate upon, on any enquiry I flatter myself your Excellency would consider this appointment, neither dishonourable nor unsafe to the United States.

Should your Excellency condescend to afford me your patronage and protection, I should embrace the first opportunity to pay you my personal respects and even pray for your felicity. With the highest esteem I have the Honour to be / Your Excellencys most obedient & / devoted Servant
