Adams Papers

From John Adams to Prince Henry Frederick, 28 February 1788

Grosvenor Square 28th Febry. 1788

It is a mortification to me, to be obliged to leave London without an Audience of Leave of His Royal Highness the Duke of Cumberland but an unforseen necessity of making a Tour, to Holland before my Embarkation for America renders it, impossible for me to ask, the Honour of an Audience of His Royal Highness. It is to me a relief under this dissappointment to reflect that His Royal Highnesses uninterrupted attendance in Parliament, and on the important Tryal in Westminster would render it inconvenient to His Royall Highness to admit me at this Time to an Audience of Leave

I must therefore beg the favour of you Sir to make my excuses with every respect to his Royal Highness.
