Adams Papers

To John Adams from George Clinton, 3 December 1787

New–York 3d December 1787.—

Permit me to take the Liberty of recommending to your Excellency’s Attention & Patronage Mrs: Grace Mercer the Lady—who will have the Honor of delivering you this Letter—She is represented to me as a Lady of good Sense & great Merit and is the Widow of the late Worthy & Patriotic Colonel Richard Mercer who was banished from Charlestown South Carolina when the British Troops took Possession of that City and soon after died in Philadelphia.

Her Business in England is to recover a considerable Sum of Money due from a Person there to her Husbands Estate and I am so fully convinced that any Assistance which your Excellency may be pleased to give to render her Errand Successfull will be well bestowed that I shall esteem it a favour conferred on / Dear Sir / Your / most / Obedt Servant.
